Applications are currently open for the Lex: lead Annual Essay Contest 2024. They welcome top-ranked essays that address this year’s prompt: “How successful have laws protecting children’s rights been in eliminating poverty and fostering economic growth? What improvements could be implemented?”

Lex: lead provides an annual essay competition focusing on law and development for the world’s least developed countries. They award one-time US$500 prizes to students who address crucial questions in their essays.

 

The contest asks for essays that answer this question: “How well have laws safeguarding children’s rights reduced poverty and promoted economic development? What improvements can be made?”

Lex: lead is a community of global lawyers and allies committed to aiding economic development in the least developed countries. They host a yearly essay competition for students from eligible countries, focusing on law and development topics.

Since 2015, Lex: lead has been arranging internships for their students with the World Bank and NGOs. In 2018, they initiated a mentoring program for their winners. Supported by funding from the International Bar Association Foundation, Lex: lead is a partner of the World Bank-backed Global Forum on Law, Justice, and Development.

Awards

  • Up to 16 US$500 awards will be available. Awards are generally payable to the winner’s educational institution on his/her behalf and not to the winning student directly. Funds received may also be less any necessary bank conversion fees and/or taxes. Lex: The lead will never charge a fee to participate.
  • A Certificate of Participation will be sent to all registered candidates who submit an essay by 31 December 2024.

Eligibility

  • Eligible students should have citizenship and enrolment with at least one law class in an eligible country.
  • Finalists will need to show citizenship and current enrolment at an accredited institution in one of the eligible countries with at least one law class to be confirmed for an award.

  • Asia/Pacific/Middle East: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Kiribati, Lao, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, Yemen
  • Africa: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Rep., Chad, Comoros, DR Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan (Rep.), Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
